We knew that Arvind Ethan David, a long time fan of Douglas Adams, and co-creator of "Dirk", the play adaption of the first Dirk Gently back in 1992, was working on a brand new adaptation of Dirk Gently on TV, this time with Max Landis as the main writer (the 2010 TV series on BBC4 was penned by Howard "Misfits" Overman).

The Uk version, broadcast on BBC4 in 2010 and 2012, with Stephen Mangan playing Dirk Gently, just lasted four episodes (one pilote and the three episodes of season 1).

Now Variety just confirmed that BBC America ordered a brand new version. First news, the series will feature one big mystery per season and he will have a brand new sidekick named Todd ("The series will follow the surreal adventures of the highly unconventional detective and his reluctant assistant Todd as they navigate one big metaphysical mystery per season.").

As in the US comics launched in 2015 by IDW (which also co-produce the TV series), Dirk will of course head to the US to live his new adventures.

BBC America president Sarah Barnett is quite enthusiastic about the project and Max Landis' take on Dirk Gently : ” ‘Dirk Gently’ is a very original series, fresh and unlike anything else. The novels have legions of fans, and with Max Landis’ brilliant and audacious take on this material we are excited to bring Dirk to life for our BBCA super-fans".

Apparently we can expect ten episodes for the first series. No news right now about the casting, the filming schedule and so on. But we can expect news quickly.

The new series is co-produced by AMC Studios, Ideate Media and comic book publisher IDW Entertainment with Circle of Confusion producing.

Susan Sheridan, who played Trillian in the radio series, has died aged 68 the 9th August 2015.

Her voice is instantly recognizable for all Hitchhiker fans. She was Trillian since the broadcast of the first H2G2 radio episode in 1978. She was not casted in the TV adaptation but remained Trillian in the five H2G2 radio series and was also part of the H2G2 radio series live stage tours in 2012 and 2013.

Apart from Hitchhiker, Susan Sheridan was a voice coach, and provided her voice to a number of animations. She voiced Princess Elionwy in the Disney animation The Black Cauldron.

She was also quite a loveable person for all those who had the opportunity to meet her (me included).

She died peacefully at home due to ilness.

Dirk Maggs, producer of the new H2G2 radio series, broke the sad news to the fans : "Heartbroken to report that my dear friend and colleague Susan Sheridan died peacefully at home yesterday. Sue was cast as Trillian by Douglas Adams and Geoffrey Perkins in 1978 for the first radio series of Hitchhikers and returned for the last three radio series in 2004-5, after which she joined the cast for our Hitchhikers Live stage tours in 2012-13. Sue had a full and happy career on stage, radio and television, where for many years she was the voice of Enid Blyton's 'Noddy'. Backstage, Sue was warm, witty and wise, with a wicked sense of humour, which kept us sane during some trying times on the road. We will miss Sue dreadfully and our love and thoughts go to her husband Max and daughters Emily, Alice and Olivia."

Simon Jones wrote on his facebook page : "Yesterday our tight little group of original Hitchhikers became sadly diminished with the loss of our beloved Sue, when her sparkling light left our Galaxy, and left us lonely and bereft. We've known each other for two years shy of forty years, which is a fact that seems incredible to ponder. It was wonderful to be reunited for the Live Hitchhikers Tours that started in 2012, and to rekindle our long-standing friendship and team spirit, Those early days when we all assembled with Douglas Adams and Geoffrey Perkins seemed suddenly to have been made vividly recent, and her feisty energy invigorated us all, and made us value her more than ever. Her Trillian was practical and vital, and she more than made up for the somewhat sketchy character that Douglas had given her. Out of the studio she was also a delight, and I can only say to Max, Emily, Alice and Olivia, that she enriched all our lives in a very special way that will stay with us forever. Nancy and I send them our love and support."Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300596656994683160.post-84019654483681041122014-11-30T03:09:00.000-08:002014-11-30T03:09:32.692-08:00Douglas Adams Day on Sunday 14th Dec

Once again this year, there will be a large number of events to celebrate Towel Day. So don't miss the biggest day of the year and don't forget your towel !

You'll find an almost complete list of events all around the globe on towelday.org.

There is no reason to stay indoors and alone with your towel for such a day. Events will take place in severail cities of Brazil, Sweden, Germany or Australia to name but a few.

Two of the biggest events will occur in UK and France.

The National Space Centre (Leicester) will be celebrating Towel Day with special guests, displays, talks, workshops and something for everybody to enjoy. There will be two Marvin, Kevin Davies, Dirk Maggs, one Trillian,... More informations here.

In Paris, my association the Grand Ordre de la Serviette (GOS) will celebrate its 6th event for Towel Day. Action starts at 10 AM with a City of Death Tour (Dr Who and Douglas Adams fans will rejoice !), then it will continue with the infamous Towel Olympics (from 3 PM) and then with end with beers, peanuts and a lot of other things at the geek bar Le Dernier Bar Avant la Fin du Monde. Like last year, a special towel has been creatd for the french towel day (see picture below). In fact we began the festivities last week end but of course 25th May is the big day. Full details here (in french)

Saturday 29th March, the cast reunited for a special H2G2 Live event at the BBC radio theatre. The event was part of Radio 4's Character Invasion program.

The program was adapted and directed by the quite unique Dirk Maggs and starring all the main actors from the original radio series : Simon Jones (Arthur), Mark Wing-Davey (Zaphd), Stephen Moore (Marvin), Sue Sheridan (Trillian) and Geoffrey McGivern (Ford). And the original producer John Lloyd was The Voice of the Book.

Here is a short review from H2G2 expert, David Haddocks :

" The show was 75 minutes so not the full presentation of what toured in 2012 and 2013 and they did most of the visual side of the sound effects you will be aware of if your saw it in a theatre. At the end of the Pan-Galactic Gargleblaster mixing Mark got a straw stuck in his glasses so there is an extra big laugh that means nothing to the radio audience. Dirk was somewhat stressed by having to keep to a set time and at one point indicated to the cast to stretch things out a bit. I am not sure if this prompted Geoff and Toby to throw in the extra deja vue joke that looked to confuse Simon momentarily, but he handled it with aplomb even if he did end up reading from Toby's script rather than his own. At the end there was a standing ovation and the cast were joined on stage for the curtain call by Stephen Moore and he gave the Marvin robot a kiss."

First, the Highgate Cemetery where Douglas Adams is burried is organizing a special event called "Douglas Adams: A Conversation at the End of the Universe".

Special guests Lalla Ward and Richard Dawkins will share memories of Douglas Adams.
As you may know Lalla Ward is a former Doctor Who companion and played with Tom Baker in Douglas Adams episodes "City of death" and "Shada".

Richard Dawkins, was a good friend of Douglas Adams. They shared a same views of live and also their atheism. evolutionary biologist and author of books such as "The Selfish Gene" and "The God Delusion". They met after Richard wrote Douglas the only fan letter he ever wrote, and Douglas replied with a fan letter of his own.

Lalla and Richard met at a party for Douglas’ 40th birthday in 1992 and were married later the same year.
The event is sold out, but I really hope that we'll get pictures and reports from the evening.

The Second event of the day is the annual Douglas Adams Memorial Lecture that will take at the Royal Geographical Society.

This year's lecture will explore a theme close to the hearts of many of Douglas' fans : "We will be exploring science in fiction, taking a closer look at two popular fictional worlds - Harry Potter and the Simpsons - and exploring the science within".

This year's speakers will be Roger Highfield and Simon Singh.
It has just been anounced that he Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy Radio Show 2013 Tour has been cancelled. The show was due to continue till the end of November.

All our thoughts to the fantastic team that brought to us this incredible show, principally Dirk Maggs.

"IMPORTANT NOTICE

The Radio Theatre Company deeply regret to announce the immediate cancellation of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy Radio Show 2013 Tour. Tonight's performance at The Hawth, Crawley and tomorrow's at the Watford Colosseum will not take place, nor will any of the remaining scheduled shows in October and November. Ticket holders are being contacted and should contact venues for refunds.

Although a well-loved show, Hitchhiker's Live has been subject to the same extreme economic pressures as many productions touring the UK this autumn. Ticket sales across the board have been lower than average and we have not escaped this trend. A difficult financial environment for such a large and technical show means that covering operating costs has become impossible. As a result in the last 24 hours we have had no option but make the extremely hard and painful decision to stop the tour.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and share the extreme disappointment and frustration felt by many who were looking forward to seeing the show. we sincerely hope that it can be brought back in the future."
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show Live is back for a two and a half month tour in UK starting the 14th September in London and finishing the 30th November in Milton Keynes.

Almost the entire casting is back but Mark Wing-Davey, the original Zaphod, who won't be here this time. But fear not. Dirk Maggs, director and adaptator of Hitchhiker Live, has found a valuable replacement : Mitch Benn. Otherwise, Simon Jones (Arthur Dent), Geoff McGivern (Ford), Susan Sheridan (Trillian), Stephen Moore (Marvin) are all part of the show !

Announcements for the Voice of the Book have been incredible : Neil Gaiman, Clive Anderson, Colin Baker, Billy Boyd, John Lloyd, Jon culshaw, Miriam Margolyes...

If you missed last year tour, you don't want to make the same mistake. So book now !
Thebookseller.com has just anounced that "Preface publisher Trevor Dolby has bought world rights to "The Frood: A Guide to the Galaxy of Douglas Adams" by Jem Roberts, for hardback publication in autumn 2014".

Jem Roberts is not new to british comedy history. He previously wrote "The Clue Bible: The Fully Authorised History of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue" and "The True History of the Black Adder".

The bookseller.com quotes publisher Trevor Dolby. "Following the wonderful reception of Jem's last book, The True History of the Black Adder, published by Preface in 2012, I'm very pleased to have convinced him that the time is right to gather Douglas' friends and acquaintances round the campfire, share stories and celebrate the man and his greatest work, H2G2." Roberts said that thought there were "a clutch of great biographies published in the wake of [Adams'] heart-breaking loss", but that "so much time has passed that a whole new celebration of the Universe he created seemed timely and welcome".

On his twitter account, Jem Roberts has announced that he exepcts to work nine month on this project : "This one = 9 months-ish. Result = I am living and breathing Hitchhiker until April." He also announced that the launch of a H2G2 blog was "imminent".

Don't hesitate to follow Jem Roberts on Twitter : https://twitter.com/JemRoberts

Once again this year Towel Day will be huge. And as it will be a saturday and not a damn week day, there will be ever more celebrations than usual.

If you check towelday.org, you will probably find a nice event happening not too far from where you live. If there is not one yet, it's still time to organize something !

In Vancouver, the Public Library is organizing once again the horribly hilarious Annual Vogon Poetry Slam. In Turku (Finland), like every year since 2006, the worst poetry in the univers will be recited at Cosmic Comic Cafe. In Brasília-DF, Brazil, for the second consecutive year, Towel Day will be celebrated with a Vogon Poetry Contest! In Netherlands, Nijmegen will be a hotbed of Towel Day activity, with lectures, live comedy and music. In In St. Louis, MO (US), anime store Animeggroll is doing a towel drive for the local Crestwood animal shelter. In the Italian Alps you can meet fellow hitchhikers at an alpine refuge (altitude: 1200 meters), not far from Lake Maggiore, ...

In UK, there will be events and meetings in London, Canterbury, Oxford and Edinburgh, but the biggest event will take place in Cambridge with the Cambridge Towel Day Tour (12h-14h) and Cambridge Towel Day Talks (15h-18h).

In Paris, Towel Day is once again organized by Grand Ordre de la Serviette (GOS), my own association. We'll have Dirk Maggs (the guy who adapted the three last hitchhiker books for the BBC, but also the two Dirk Gently books, and who organized the Hitchhiker Live Tour), a commemorative towel, a commemorative poster, three talks, the Towel Day Olympics, exhibitions,...
(thanks to Dave H for this goundbreaking news)

Brandon Lewis, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, is undoubtly so coool it would fluster a Vegan snow lizard! He quoted Vogon Jeltz in an answer to a question from a Member of Parliament.

Sadly it was a written answer. It would have been great to have Vogon Jeltz quotation read aloud in the UK Parliament !!!

Tom Blenkinsop: To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government whether his Department has any plans to deregulate the publication of planning permission applications in local newspapers.

Brandon Lewis : (...) my Department does not have any current plans to remove the statutory requirement for certain planning applications to be advertised in newspapers. Such notices ensure that the public are informed of decisions by their local authority which may affect their quality of life, local amenity or their property. This is especially the case in relation to planning applications, where there is a limited period for local residents to make representations.

More broadly, in response to his implicit suggestion that such notices should be abolished in newspapers, I would direct the hon. Member to a passage from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

“People of Earth, your attention, please... This is Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz of the Galactic Hyperspace Planning Council. As you will no doubt be aware, the plans for development of the outlying regions of the Galaxy require the building of a hyperspatial express route through your star system, and regrettably, your planet is one of those scheduled for demolition. The process will take slightly less than two of your Earth minutes. Thank you...
There's no point in acting surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for fifty of your Earth years, so you've had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it's far too late to start making a fuss about it now...
What do you mean you've never been to Alpha Centauri? Oh, for heaven's sake, mankind, it's only four light years away, you know. I'm sorry, but if you can't be bothered to take an interest in local affairs, that's your own lookout. Energize the demolition beams.”Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300596656994683160.post-40510575604613826492013-03-11T00:14:00.002-07:002013-03-12T00:14:34.398-07:00Google pays tribute to Douglas Adams for his 61st birthday
The 11th march 2013 we celebrate Douglas Adams' 61st Birthday. Google pays tribute to the man with one of its famous doodles. Thanks Big G ! ;)

The doodle was created by Sophia Foster-Dimino. She explains how she worked on this doodle on the doodles' site where all the doodles are archived. So you can still see it here and read Sophia explanations and homage to DNA .

Google founders love Hitchhiker. When you ask google.com what is "The answer to life, the universe and everything", it still answers 42.

And Eric Schmidt, executive chairman and former CEO of Google, told last year : "Think back to Star Trek, or my favourite, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Much of what those writers imagined is now possible," Schmidt said.

"Translating... voice recognition, electronic books. The people who predict that intelligent robots, virtual reality or self-driving cars will soon be commonplace are right," he continued.
"Governments will be able to spot the economic makings of a crisis before they happen and doctors will be able to accurately predict the outbreak of disease before anyone feels it."

Douglas Adams died 12 years ago and Google's doodle also makes us remember how young he was when he died. 49 years old, damn it ! It was such a shock for so many fans in the universe. "Life, don't talk to me about life" !

Douglas Adams was a comic genius, author of the celebrated "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series (which started in 1978 as a radio series but which also spanned through five books, a six episodes BBC TV series, several plays, a movie, a computer game,...), but also of two Dirk Gently books (two books plus an unfinished one, a famous play called "Dirk", two radio series and a four episodes BBC TV series), a dictionary about names that should exist ("The Meaning of Liff") and a remarkable book about endangered species "Last Chance to See"(book, radio series, computer software, TV documentary series).

He was also a radical atheist, a rock addict (who owned many left hand guitars and played on stage with Pink Floyd for his 42nd Birthday).

Polly, Douglas Adams' daughter, has been interviewed for the first time ever (well at least to my knowledge) on an Australian radio where she currently (as january 2013) gets some holidays.

A great little interview very informative and funny. Polly is so kind and witty, that's pretty nice to hear her here :
This is of course great news for all Doctor Who fans and Douglas Adams fans alike. BBC video has just released a great DVD boxset. It contains the legendary and unfinished "Shada" story never fully completed. You'll find all the existing footage + some Tom Baker narration to fill the missing gaps.

The boxset contains also the BBC produced documentary "More than thirty years in the Tardis" (1993), a famous documentary about the first thirty years of Doctor Who directed by Kevin Davies (who also directed the also famous "The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" TV series making of).

That's great news indeed. US and Australian fans can cross their fingers. It would be great for them if this time it was a worldwide tour (I have no much hope that they come to France but I will sure go see the show again in 2013 - note that according to what has been announced it could be a NEW show) .Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300596656994683160.post-66347641425678839292012-07-20T06:39:00.002-07:002012-07-22T06:34:58.726-07:00The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Radio series Live, the FULL review

At last, my best birthday party ever. The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy Radio Series Live just for me. Well, me and a few other spectators in the fully packed Hackney Empire Theatre. It was an historic day. The 19th July, Hitchhiker’s Live was in London and I was here.

I was eager to see how Dirk, a radio man and a fine drummer (a man, a priori , more at ease with sound and "maybe" less with visuals), would translate visually Hitchhiker on stage. Even if it was not the first time he did it. The first time Hitchhiker has been performed live was in March 2008 during the sixth Douglas Adams memorial lecture for the 30th anniversary of the radio series. It was a performance of Episode 2 with the actors on stage. If my memory serves me right, the only visual aspect was Simon Jones in his dressing gown. In October 2009, it was a much more visual 90 minute long performance at the Hitchcon that took bits from different episodes.

But never anything had been done on this scale. We still have the actors playing on stage in front of mics with their scripts in their hands (it's a live radio show, not a theatre play). But there is a real set with lot of props, screens in the back, a live band in the left corner, the sound effect counter (on rollers!), and the narrator club chair in the right corner...

So Hitchhiker’s Live is not just audio, we have a lot of things going on on the stage. Dirk Maggs and Ken Humphrey do most of the sound effects live with various and often funny objects. The sound effects are indeed as much sound than visual jokes. Dirk and Ken make a great duo. They should probably start a comedy routine on their own.

Dirk is really the conductor of the show, sitting behind the drums, doing sound effects behind the counter, or miming hysterically Agrajag with a black umbrella. I wish I will be in such a great condition at his age (OK, next time I see him he'll probably hit me with the said umbrella, but he knows how much I love what he's done for years on Hitchhiker. He's the best thing that happened to Hitchhiker in the 21st century).

The Hitchhiker’s actors are some of the best. A rare breed. It was such a pleasure to see all of them (well sadly Stephen Moore, the famous voice of Marvin, was pre recorded, but that seems logical). At the London show, I found Geoff McGivern to be in a great form, he almost stole the show. But of course Simon Jones, Susan Sheridan and Mark Wing-Davey are huge bigger than life actors too. It was great to see that the "newcomers" were so good. Toby Longworth is an excellent Vogon Captain, Andy Secombe (Harry's very talented son) is a great Colin/Max/door, Samantha Béart a nice Random and a realistic teenager (to be clear about Random, I said in my previous review I was not fond of the character bits in Hitchhiker, the actress knows perfectly her job). And of course, the narrator for the London show was no less than the unique Terry Jones! So, with Hitchhiker’s Live you get a great flawless casting.

I also loved Marvin's retro design, the best representation of the manically depressed robot since the Illustrated Guide version in 1994. I feared it could be too static, but it is superbly lively and well animated.

The show was very smooth-running. You sense that Dirk spent time to perfect the show since the beginning of the tour according the audience reactions.

Maybe a few words about the merchandising, as it's difficult not to buy something from the shop. Everything is top quality. I chose a big size glazed paper souvenir brochure and the nicely done official towel (both articles are rather cheap for such quality items. I also took the Babel fish USB key (OK it's just 1gb but it's so cooool). T-shirts are also great and I'll try to buy all of them later when I’ll get (hopefully) some more money.

It was also nice to hug the lovely Sue (Douglas' sister), and to shake hands with Polly (Douglas’s daughter). What an honour! And of course to meet again my friends Kevin Davies (the legendary KJD who worked on most Hitchhiker incarnations) and his fabulous son Liam. Plus the ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha fantastic bunch (with its top notch president Dave - he'll proof read this review so I prefer to be careful with what I say). What a night! I even forgot to smoke my birthday cigar. First time in years.

Due to the success of the show, I'm quite sure it will tour again soon across UK but maybe also hopefully in other parts of the world. With such a team, and such a show, it would be sad not to take the next step. Come on Dirk, you know you want it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300596656994683160.post-19647506095531137972012-06-21T23:28:00.001-07:002012-07-22T06:35:40.439-07:00The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Radio series Live, the AUDIO review

The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy is now on tour live on stage since the 8th June.

It's a long way since March 2008 when James Thrift, Douglas Adams' brother, asked to the public, after a reacting of the episode 2 with the original cast, if they would be willing to see Hitchhiker on Stage.

In October 2009, during the Hitchcon, we were blessed with a 90 minute long adaptation of the radio series, adapted and directed by Dirk Maggs.

Dirk Maggs is, of course, the man behind the three last Hitchhiker series (aired in 2004 and 2005) and also the Dirk Gently adaptations (in 2007 and 2008). To say that he knows perfectly Douglas Adams' work is a euphemism. So it comes with no surprise that he is the man behind this latest version of Hitchhiker.

I have not seen the show yet. I intend to see it the 19th July when the show comes to London (on my birthday!). "So how can you write a bloody review of the show ???" you could justifiably ask.

Well, being French I'm kind of deceitful, and thrived on a recent journey to London to buy and download the audio version of the show that every British citizen can buy and download on the official website (if you don't live in UK, you can't, let that be a lesson to you!). In fact, if you live in UK, you can buy and download the version of the show you want (the audio recording of each show stays online during 7 days). Maybe it's a good thing that I don't live in UK, because it would have been very difficult for me to stop myself from buying each version of the show.

To write my review, I chose deliberately the recording of the first date of the tour: the recording from the 8th June made in Glasgow. The interesting side is to listen to the show as it was originally conceived without the little changes that sure will follow the first dates (and DaveH, ZZ9 president and well known Hitchhiker expert, told me that "Dirk is tweaking the show to remove what he calls "flat spots" where he was expecting something from the audience but didn't get it. In Northampton there was a new punchline to the mixing of the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster).

As you may know, at least one important bit changes in almost each city where Hitchhiker Live goes. It's the voice of the book. In Glasgow, the part was played by Scottish actor Billy Boyd (of Lord of the Rings fame).

But let's begin with the review.

The show begins with music and not just any music but with Pink Floyd. A fitting tribute as Douglas Adams was a fan and friend of David Gilmour but also because in the original radio series Marvin hums some Pink Floyd on Magrathea (a bit that you can't find on the CD and tape versions of the series for copyright reasons). Also Pink Floyd's "One of these days" (the said music) quotes Dr Who theme music (another fitting tribute).

Here begins the show. And one bit of a shock as it doesn't start at the right place! But your shock just begins to dispel that the earth gets destroyed and you hear "Journey of the Sorcerer" (Hitchhiker legendary theme). It makes me shudder when I hear that one.

I won't describe all of what you'll get in the show because I don't want to spoil the pleasure to discover it by yourself.

It won't come as a surprise for those who have seen Hitchhiker Live at Hitchcon three years ago, but don't expect from Dirk Maggs a straightforward version of the Hitchhiker original series in the right order and with every bit in it.

Nevertheless, don't worry too much. Dirk knows perfectly well Hitchhiker and could probably quote most of the series by heart. So in this two hour long show that include pieces from almost each of the five radio series, Dirk didn't let out something mind-boggingly vital out of the show. Most of the best bits of Hitchhiker are there (even when entire corresponding passages have been removed: no Prosser in Hitchhiker Live, no Horse and Groom neither. As I told you the show literally begins with the destruction of the earth.

As usual, Dirk didn't hesitate to add his own jokes and bits of dialogues. But it's always respectful and in tune with Hitchhiker global mood. Even if I think that Dirk versions of Hitchhiker will always be less ambiguous than the Adams' ones. In the original Hitchhiker radio series, there is a kind of bitterness, that you may not find here (even if the Hitchhiker concept and text is and will always remain full of black humour). With Dirk Maggs, Hitchhiker is nevertheless more joyful.

Of course, when you listen to the audio version of a stage show, you've got the feeling sometimes you miss something (visual jokes,...). But it stands really on its own as an audio show, and the sound quality is just great even if it is a raw / non edited version (but once again, that is no surprise with Dirk Maggs). The addition of a live band and funny songs is welcome. Douglas Adams wanted Hitchhiker to sound as a rock album, so yep Hitchhiker Live sounds accordingly (or at least a pop rock one). Speaking of sound effects, some of them used in the show, as the guide sound, come from the original series. That's a nice touch. Sometimes I found that maybe there is not enough of them. I found the Restaurant bit a little on the quiet side. But once again it was a raw audio version of the show so i may be mistaken.

On the whole, I'm more pleased with the first half of the show even if there are excellent bits in the second half (Agrajag - voiced by Douglas Adams as in the radio series - and the Restaurant at the end of the universe). I've never been much of a fan of Random (Trillian and Arthur's daughter) so I would not have been that sad if she had been left out of the show, and the end is a little disappointing (ideally I would have wanted something more spectacular - maybe like the end of the Quintessential phase of the H2G2 radio series as written by... Dirk Maggs).

Still, Hitchhiker live is spectacular. The main actors are all part of the legend. Of course you won't get Peter Jones as the Voice of the Book, but for me, and regarding the Glasgow show, Billy Boyd played a nice Scottish version of the book.

I can't wait to be able to see Hitchhiker Live in all its visual splendour, and to laugh with the audience, at what will remain for centuries to come one of the best incarnations of the British sense of humour. Outrageously witty and funny, that is "The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy"! Here live and with the original actors packed in it. By Zarquon, you don't want to miss it.
